Individuals and families with an annual household income of $64,000 or less can file for free through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, sponsored by Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc. The program is a grant-based IRS initiative designed to support free tax preparation service for the underserved through various partner organizations. Nationally the VITA program has operated for over 50 years and annually helps low- to-moderate-income families, those with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English speakers file their taxes.
This is the fourth consecutive year that Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc. has sponsored the VITA program locally. The IRS awards matching funds to these support organizations that offer free tax preparation services during the tax filing season at locations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
VITA services are free and a reliable source for preparing tax returns. All VITA volunteers who prepare returns must take and pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. This training includes maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all taxpayer information. In addition to requiring volunteers to certify their knowledge of the tax laws, the IRS requires a quality review check for every return prepared at a VITA site before filing.
VITA volunteers will be at the downtown Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library located at 209 Lincolnway East on Tuesdays, starting Tuesday, February 6, through Tuesday, April 9.
