Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July!

Back in 1776, a group of colonists got together to declare independence from King George III of England.  The colonists didn’t think it was fair that they had to pay taxes to a government in which they had no say. They decided to form a new government instead. Representatives from all 13 colonies met for days.  On July 4th, 1776, the historic Declaration of Independence was approved.

Fun fact: A simple legal document was first drawn in June, the declaration was approved on July 4th, and the fancy parchment we all know and love wasn’t created until later that month, with most of the signings occurring on August 2nd.

Another fun fact: John Adams was so excited that he wrote a letter to his wife, Abigail, telling her, “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary Festival.” While he was two days off about the date, it seems he was correct in predicting American’s party habits. Now, every year Americans throw a giant birthday party to celebrate our rebel leaders’ decision.  Businesses and government offices shut down, cities have parades and end the day with a bang - shooting explosions into the night sky, terrifying our pets. Many of our military bases organize 50 gunshots - one for each state - to be fired at noon on July 4th.
