POSITION: Reference and Information Services Coordinator
LOCATION: Downtown Mishawaka Library (Primary Location)
CLASSIFICATION: Service Coordinator
FLSA Status: Exempt
HOURS OF WORK: Full Time/40 hours per week with at least one evening per week and alternate Saturdays (work in Saturday rotation). Should the library be open on Sundays, some Sunday work will be required.
WAGE: Specified in the latest salary schedule kept in the Director’s office.
BENEFITS: As specified in the latest edition of the staff handbook or as amended by the Board of Trustees.

QUALIFICATIONS AND WORK SKILLS:
- An MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school.
- Three years reference services experience.
- Supervisory skills necessary; 2 years supervisory experience preferred.
- Ability to work well with patrons and staff.
- Ability to instruct patrons and staff about technology and materials.
- Thorough knowledge of both print and online reference sources.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
The purpose of this position is to coordinate the system’s Reference Services, supervise the Main library’s Reference librarians, and to provide high-quality reference service for the library’s patrons.
Essential job duties:
- Supervise, train, and evaluate the downtown Mishawaka library’s Reference librarians and Main Library’s Periodical Assistant.
- Coordinate system-wide Reference Services. Communicate regularly with Main and Branch Reference Services staff through meetings. Ensure that minutes are written and shared.
- Work at the reference desk several shifts per week and other public desks as assigned.
- Preview, select, and purchase online reference sources in consultation with the Reference Department staff, Branch Managers, Assistant Director, and Director.
- Coordinate the training of library staff, at Main and the branches, in the use of print and online reference sources, the library’s computer catalog, and selection database. Conduct training sessions for library staff and the public in the use of print and online reference sources and the library’s computer catalog.
- Assist with offering Internet and computer training for the public.
- Working with the Assistant Director and the Reference Department staff, develop the reference and circulating print collections for the adult and young adult departments, including large print, Spanish, and other special collections.
- Participate in collection development activities including online ordering, weeding, etc.
- Lead readers’ advisory services at the Main library including creating booklists and bibliographies, in print and on the library’s webpage, and work with Reference Services in setting up displays.
- Maintain and develop the Internet links on the library’s homepage. Transmit the information to the applicable party for updates to the library’s website.
- Contribute toward the adult and young adult programming at the Main Library; for example, lead book discussions when needed.
- Complete the monthly shelf reading assignment (on chart as assigned by Circulation Services Coordinator).
- Participate as a member of the library’s Administrative team and serve on library committees as necessary.
- Act as the library representative for the Indiana State Data Center as an affiliate and attend required training seminars.
- To perform other duties as may be assigned to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the library.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to occasionally pull/push a cart with materials out of a dumbwaiter, elevator, or across the building from one work area to another.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry 20-30 pounds of materials from one work area to another.
- Ability to frequently stand, bend or stoop for a short period of time.
- Ability, stamina, and balance to perform basic movements frequently. These movements could include squatting, bending and stooping, marching, turning in circles, and lifting arms overhead.
- Ability to constantly sit for extended periods of time while keyboarding or typing.
