NEA Grant Funds Big Read at MPHPL this Fall

MPHPL and its partners IUSB and Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #1027 have been named recipients of a grant to bring literature and art to the community.  The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien will be the book at the core of it all.

In its official press release announcing the 2017-18 grant recipients NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, “Through the NEA Big Read we are bringing contemporary works to communities across the country, helping us better understand the diverse voices and perspectives that come with it.  These 75 organizations have developed unique plans to celebrate these works, including numerous opportunities for exploration and conversation.

Published in 1990, The Things They Carried is considered one of the finest books about the Vietnam War.  It is O’Brien’s semi-autobiographical account of a young platoon and is a compassionate tale of the American soldier in combat and back on the homefront.

Events will start in September and will continue for the rest of 2017.  There will be multiple books discussions, an art exhibit, a concert of Vietnam era folk music, a writer’s workshop, a history discussion, several film screenings, a Tedx event, as well as much more.  For more information, watch the MPHPL Events calendar and also check out the official blog of NEA Big Read St. Joe County
