The Cardturner by Louis Sachar

Mr. Sachar has written another brilliant novel. He received the Newbery award for the book HOLES.

The main character, Alton Richards, is the "cardturner" for his blind great-uncle, Lester Trapp.Alton does not know anything about the game of Bridge. His parents who hope to inherit some of Mr. Trapp's money.Alton is starting to become interested in the game and is more motivated when he meets Toni Castaneda. She is a teenager who has played Bridge for a while.

The more Alton gets to know Toni the more interested he gets in her, but there is also another hitch.Toni is dating Alton's best friend.Eventually, Toni and Alton are partners in a Bridge tournament. They receive a little assistance at the tournament in a most unique way.

I am not going to share much more about the story because it contains so much.Readers will be hooked from the very first page

THE CARDTURNER is about far more than the game of Bridge. The story contains mystery and quite a bit of intrigue.

Louis Sachar is aware that not many teens play the game of Bridge. He has provided the rules for interested readers. The detailed rules start every time there is a drawing of a whale. He also provides an abbreviated version for individuals who do not want all of the information.
